SWK 160 - Foundational Skills

Foundational Skills introduces students to the essential skills and values of professional social work practice, preparing them for bachelor of social work (BSW) programs and entry-level roles in social services. Through weekly hands-on activities, students will develop foundational skills in communication, interviewing, documentation, advocacy, ethical decision-making, and community organizing. Emphasis is placed on cultural  humility, professional boundaries, and the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics. Students will practice strategies for engaging with individuals and communities, responding to crises, collaborating with professionals, and developing a professional portfolio. This course offers an up-close and personal look at the day-to-day skills and techniques used by social workers and supports students in building confidence and professionalism.

Note: This course requires basic reading, writing, and math skills.
